The property is a beautiful detached house dating from 1936 set in a generous mature garden with outdoor swimming pool, just a short walk from Richmond Park. The accommodation is arranged over three floors, with decorative internal and external elements inspired by the late Arts and Crafts period.
Our brief was to help the client finalise the new layout, submit relevant applications to the Local Authority to increase the footprint and adapt the facades, as well as to construct a new alfresco pool house living/dining room in the garden. We are providing structured professional support on site to the client and the contractor.
The new owners wish to create a home with soul for the next 10+ years, so it was important to deliver a scheme that was of a particularly high design quality and incorporated low energy strategies for running the pool and house. Due consideration was given to the protected trees in and around the site and liaison with the structural engineer and builder from the concept stage of the project has allowed us to develop specific foundations for the pool house which would not be detrimental to the roots of a nearby willow.
The client is drawn to a contemporary Scandinavian design style, whilst wishing to enhance the existing architectural features of the house which give it its character. An important aspect of the design is to reinforce the sense of journey when moving from the entrance to the garden. This was achieved by reinstating symmetry, particularly the main visual and circulation axes from the front door to the rear terrace. Enhancing the north west facing spaces which catch the evening light and overlook the garden are at the heart of the renovation. Dedicated and spacious storage/utility areas maximise the usable floor space available and avoid clutter.
